The meeting discussed the critical role of teamwork and collaboration for better patient outcomes. Also, discussed the many ways of ensuring that fistual’s once made, stayed open. Techniques discussed included the one’s currently offered by Vascular.ae at the various hospitals at which the collaboration with Vascular.ae exists. These included the role of ultrasound surveillance as well as pre-emptive fistuloplasties. The meeting was attended by Neprhologists from across the country – as well as by the Lead Transplant Surgeon for kidney transplants at SKMC.
We presented our data on the more than 200 patients on whom successful dialysis fistula’s or grafts have been placed over the last 6 years in the UAE. The results discussed confirmed the importance of the “Fistula first” and the more than 97% rate of native fistula creation by us; with a 2-year patency rate of above 80% compared with international data of about 65% for these fistulas. Also discussed were the fistula’s created in unique parts of the body, on patients who had been suffering due to lack of vascular access.
