With almost 2 billion people flying annually on commercial flights, studies have shown that the risk of a DVT is 3% – 12% in long flights. Some of the risk factors for developing DVT’s during flights are:
1. Sitting in crowded positions for long durations
2. Dehydration
3. Age over 40
4. Use of oral contraceptives
5. Varicose veins in the legs
6. Obesity
7. Known clotting abnormalities
To prevent blood clots:
1. Drink plenty of fluids during flights
2. Try to avoid sitting for long durations
3. If you have any of the above risk factors – wear elastic stockings (after consulting with a vascular surgeon – [email protected])
